SCDF (Singapore Civil Defence Force)
Singapore Civil Defence Force
Just Tell Me
SCDF is Singapore’s civil defence organisation, responsible for firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services and responding to hazardous-material incidents.
Also called: Singapore Civil Defence Force
Explain Like I’m Five
SCDF brings together teams that fight fires, rescue people and provide emergency medical help. It also works before emergencies happen, through fire-safety rules and public education. The organisation is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Where You’ll Run Into It
In reports about a fire at an HDB block, a rescue operation or an emergency ambulance response. Its name also appears in fire-safety information and programmes that teach the public how to prepare for emergencies.
Residents may also see SCDF’s fire-safety guidance for common areas managed by a town council. Its name appears in NS discussions because SCDF is one of the uniformed services in which full-time national servicemen serve.
Example
“The report says SCDF firefighters put out the fire at the block.”
A resident reading neighbourhood news is seeing the name of the organisation responsible for that firefighting response.
The Part People Get Wrong
SCDF’s work extends beyond putting out fires. Rescue, emergency medical services and incidents involving dangerous substances are also part of its role. Its preventive work includes fire-safety requirements and civil defence shelter regulations, even when no emergency is taking place.
