Just Tell Me

A hawker centre is a shared Singapore dining space where many independent stalls sell a wide range of prepared food and drinks.

Also called: food centre

Explain Like I’m Five

A hawker centre is like one large community dining room surrounded by many small food businesses. You choose a stall, order directly from it and eat at the shared tables.

Where You’ll Run Into It

Hawker centres sit in residential towns, business districts and visitor areas across Singapore. A single centre may offer Chinese, Malay, Indian and other local dishes alongside drinks and desserts.

Compare a kopitiam, and see cai png for one familiar stall order. Chope explains the seat-saving shorthand. NEA and MUIS explain the different institutions mentioned in hawker-centre management and halal-certification discussions.

Example

“Let’s meet at the hawker centre so everyone can order what they want.”

The group can share a table even when each person buys from a different stall.

The Part People Get Wrong

A hawker centre is not one restaurant with one menu. It is a common dining space serving many separately operated stalls.

Watch Out

Return trays and used crockery to the designated return point. Stall hours differ, so a centre can be open even when the particular stall you want is closed.
