NEA (National Environment Agency)
National Environment Agency
Just Tell Me
NEA is Singapore’s National Environment Agency, responsible for environmental protection, public cleanliness and hygiene, waste management, weather services and hawker-centre development.
Also called: National Environment Agency
Explain Like I’m Five
NEA’s work connects several things that make a neighbourhood clean and liveable. It monitors pollution, oversees the solid-waste system and works on public hygiene. Developing and managing hawker centres, alongside weather and climate services, are also part of its remit.
Where You’ll Run Into It
In haze reports, recycling information and notices about cleanliness or hawker centres. The same initials can appear in quite different stories because the agency handles several environmental and public-health functions.
The PSI and PM2.5 pages distinguish air-quality measurements. BCRS explains the container-return scheme rather than the agency itself.
Example
“NEA is mentioned in both this air-quality report and the hawker-centre announcement.”
A resident realises these are different parts of the same agency’s responsibilities, rather than two organisations sharing an abbreviation.
The Part People Get Wrong
NEA’s role goes beyond picking up litter. It also monitors air and water pollution, supports waste reduction and resource efficiency, and provides weather information. Its public-health work includes environmental hygiene and controlling disease-carrying pests.
