MC (Medical Certificate)
medical certificate
Here, MC means medical certificate, not master of ceremonies.
Just Tell Me
In Singapore work and school contexts, an MC is a medical certificate stating that a patient is medically unfit for work or attendance.
Also called: medical certificate
Explain Like I’m Five
An MC is a document from a registered doctor or dentist certifying that someone is unfit for work for a stated period. It supports an absence; the exact leave entitlement still depends on the applicable law and employment conditions.
Where You’ll Run Into It
An employee may tell a supervisor they are “on MC” after seeing a doctor. The employer may ask for the certificate when the employee returns to work.
A clinic visit can involve an NRIC for identification and a CHAS card for covered subsidies, as well as an MC for the employer. These documents answer different questions during the same visit.
Example
“I have a fever and the doctor gave me two days’ MC.”
The doctor certified that the person should not work for the stated period.
Watch Out
An MC is not general medical advice and does not by itself explain every pay or leave outcome. Employees should follow notification requirements and check MOM guidance and their employment terms.
