CHAS (Community Health Assist Scheme)
Community Health Assist Scheme
Just Tell Me
CHAS helps Singapore citizens pay for covered healthcare at participating GP clinics, with dental subsidies available to specified cardholder groups.
Also called: Community Health Assist Scheme, CHAS card
Explain Like I’m Five
A subsidy reduces a covered healthcare bill. Under CHAS, participating general practitioner (GP) clinics and dental clinics provide covered care with support that depends on the patient’s card type and treatment. The scheme is for Singapore citizens, including Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation cardholders.
Where You’ll Run Into It
At a participating neighbourhood clinic or in information about healthcare subsidies. CHAS card colours identify different subsidy tiers, so the name alone does not tell you exactly which benefits apply.
At registration, a patient presents the valid scheme card with identification such as an NRIC. Eligible cardholders with the app can also find a digital CHAS card in Singpass. If a consultation results in an MC, that document certifies an absence rather than setting the subsidy amount.
Example
“The clinic asked about my CHAS card when I registered.”
A patient is being asked about their scheme status so the clinic can identify the relevant subsidies, rather than being promised that the entire visit is free.
The Part People Get Wrong
Having a CHAS card does not mean every treatment is covered equally. Dental subsidies are available to CHAS Blue, CHAS Orange, Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation cardholders. Public Assistance cardholders can also receive subsidies at participating CHAS dental clinics. Coverage and limits depend on the applicable benefits; the official scheme pages explain those differences.
