Retrenchment
Retrenched
Just Tell Me
Retrenchment is dismissal because a job becomes redundant or an employer reorganises its business or work.
Also called: Retrenched, Retrenchments
Explain Like I’m Five
A company can decide it needs fewer people or a different arrangement of jobs. Someone may then lose their role because of that business change. The word explains the reason for the dismissal; it does not, by itself, say the worker did anything wrong.
Where You’ll Run Into It
In Singapore job-market reports, an employer’s restructuring announcement or an HR conversation about a role being removed. MOM’s guidance says employers should consider alternatives before retrenchment.
Keep the job-loss term separate from AWS, an annual wage component, and CPF, the savings system. None of these labels alone determines a departing employee’s payout.
Example
“Our company merged two departments, and my role was removed.”
This illustrates job loss through reorganisation, rather than an employee choosing to resign.
The Part People Get Wrong
Retrenchment does not mean everyone receives the same payout. Retrenchment benefits concern compensation for losing employment; the applicable arrangements depend on factors such as employment terms and any collective agreement. MOM’s current guidance explains the details without assuming an individual worker’s outcome.
