LTA (Land Transport Authority)

Land Transport Authority

Just Tell Me

LTA is Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, which plans and develops land transport infrastructure and systems and oversees public transport.

Also called: Land Transport Authority

Explain Like I’m Five

A transport network needs someone to plan how roads, trains, buses and walking or cycling connections fit together. LTA works across that network, including infrastructure development and public-transport oversight. Transport operators have a separate role running services and maintaining the assets they use.

Where You’ll Run Into It

In announcements about new rail lines, road projects and changes to transport infrastructure. Its name also appears alongside operator names in explanations of how the bus and rail systems are organised.

The North–South Corridor and RTS Link pages explain two different transport projects. COE and ERP cover terms a motorist may encounter instead.

Example

“This announcement is from LTA, but our train service is run by an operator.”

A commuter distinguishes the authority’s network and infrastructure role from the company responsible for the service’s daily operation.

The Part People Get Wrong

LTA and a train or bus operator are not interchangeable names. For public buses, LTA owns the buses, infrastructure and systems, while operators manage and maintain them. Rail arrangements likewise separate asset ownership and investment from service operation and maintenance.
